What are antioxidants? (Part II)

Other than antioxidants, our immune system needs phytochemicals and polysaccarides too. I will share more on the other two in upcoming post :)

What are Antioxidants? (Part-I)

Antioxidants has become more and more popular nowadays as it is essential for us to stay younger thereby stay healthy.

However, do you really understand the function of antioxidants and also correct sources of antioxidants?

Please read below to have better understanding on antioxidants:

 Source: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/antioxidants.html

Antioxidants are man-made or natural substances that may prevent or delay some types of cell damage. Antioxidants are found in many foods, including fruits and vegetables. They are also available as dietary supplements. Examples of antioxidants include:
  • Beta-carotene
  • Lutein
  • Lycopene
  • Selenium
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
Vegetables and fruits are rich sources of antioxidants. There is good evidence that eating a diet with lots of vegetables and fruits is healthy and lowers risks of certain diseases. But it isn't clear whether this is because of the antioxidants, something else in the foods, or other factors.

High-dose supplements of antioxidants may be linked to health risks in some cases. For example, high doses of beta-carotene may increase the risk of lung cancer in smokers. High doses of vitamin E may increase risks of prostate cancer and one type of stroke. Antioxidant supplements may also interact with some medicines. To minimize risk, tell you of your health care providers about any antioxidants you use.

"Look and feel younger!" "Reverse the aging process!" "Boost your energy!" What could possibly do all that? -- antioxidants, devoted pill-poppers will tell you, despite the fact that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has prohibited manufacturers from claiming that consuming their antioxidant products will reduce disease risk.

Each year, countless hopeful Americans shell out billions of dollars on antioxidant supplements (nearly $2 billion, in fact, just on beta carotene and vitamins C and E), believing they will dramatically lower their risk of cancer, heart disease, and memory loss. Most experts agree, however, that taking antioxidants is not a shortcut to good health or the answer to staying young. So, where does that leave us?

Antioxidants block the process of oxidation by neutralizing free radicals. In doing so, the antioxidants themselves become oxidized. That is why there is a constant need to replenish our antioxidant resources.

The amount of antioxidants in supplements may be so high compared with that in the diet that it leads to a toxic effect.

Other nutrients may be present in fruits and vegetables that work in sync with antioxidants and are necessary to provide a protective effect.

The American Heart Association, for one, does not recommend using antioxidant supplements "until more complete data are in," but instead, suggests "people eat a variety of foods daily from all of the basic food groups."

Message is clear!

Antioxidants is indeed important, however we should obtaining antioxidants from natural sources such as wholesome plant food, which is definitely no side-effect and safe!

This is align with Nutritional Immunology, which advocates the consumption of wholesome plant food.

JY recovered from stomach flu within a day.

Received a call from school around 1pm and was told that JY vomited 3 times in school after morning snack.

I gave her one Orchestra immediately after I reached school, and she vomited out in less than 5 minutes.

After we reached home, she would vomited every time after complaining that she had stomachache for around 10 times.

I gave her another 2 cups of Orchestra with water throughout the whole afternoon. She threw up everytime after drinking water, but i continued.

By 7pm, she woke up from short nap and she told me that she is okay already. She even told me that she is hungry and asked for porridge. So I gave her plain porridge and she finished all without vomiting.

We are blessed with NI knowledge and wonderful Orchestra which helps to enhance detox function of our body. And amazed that she can recovered within 6 hours.

Today is my birthday!

Today is my birthday, an extraordinary birthday as well.

I believe many people will take annual leave on their birthday, and I was one of them.

Previously, I used to take leave on my birthday too, at least has a solid excuse to take a break from work. But the next day, I still need to face the reality - go back to work as usual. Year after year I've been practicing this for many years.

This year, happened to be my 10th year in Singapore:

I don't have to take leave on my birthday as I already gained back the ownership of my life!

I am blessed that I have incorporated my own company with company of my husband and mother today.

I never had a chance to spend my birthday with my mother ever since I started working in Singapore, this year really mean a lot to me as I am able to spend this day together with my mother!

I am blessed that I am able to get out from rat race and embark on a totally new and meaningful journey after 10 years! Able to contribute to the society other than just having a 8 to 5 routine job!

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes!

I wish all of you happiness always :)

Food Safety issue!!!

Other than Haze, another hottest topic in Singapore is none other than the recycled oil scandal.

From problematic baby formula to poisonous duck eggs to chemicals used to feed pigs to make the meat leaner and to problematic cooking oil recycled from kitchen waste and grease from animal skin, as well as the recent scandal of expired meat products used by fast food restaurants, there seems to be no end to the revelations of the lengths unscrupulous producers, dealers and retailers will go to in search of greater profits. - See more at: http://yourhealth.asiaone.com/content/fight-food-safety-asia#sthash.PO53rNUu.dpuf

So as a wise consumer, we must choose a brand that we can trust. Also, we have our rights to ensure the food safety.

All NI food from E Excel has received the FOOD SAFETY EXCELLENCE AWARD - Grade A by Singapore AVA for consecutively 10 years.

Furthermore, all products' ingredients from plantation, processing to packaging are subject to and have to pass as many as 2000 safety tests. This is the best assurance for us as consumer.

Other than that, we must ensure the manufacturer and distributor are the same company, we as a consumer will be protected in term of quality consistency and food safety.

Hope these tips are able to help you guys!
