Super Foods for Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the most important milestone in our life!

When come to pregnancy, do you agree with me SAFETY is the utmost priority in our mind?

How to ensure the personal care / toiletries mummy using is SAFE?

How to ensure the food mummy eating is SAFE?

even topics like can mummy go near to microwave, using mobile phones and etc....

Other than SAFETY, next is the NUTRITION.

We are what we eat, so provides the correct nutrients to ourselves and our little one inside us is equally important too!!!

For me, I am blessed that can get to know about the science of Nutritional Immunology, so I know how to ensure both the SAFETY & NUTRITION are well taken care of.

First step:

Make sure these superfoods are in your diet 😃.

Concurrently : how to ensure the nutrition sources are safe for consumption?
https://nutritionalimmunologylifestyle.blogspot.sg/2015/10/the-greatest-assurance-for-consumer.html

So do read till the end!

1. Protein

Protein is best to obtain from wholesome plant - which is SOY.😃

Soy is high in protein and has no cholesterol. Soy isoflavones can reduce serum cholesterol levels and help prevent coronary heart disease. Soy also contains several phytochemicals that have anti-carcinogenic properties. In addition, soy isoflavones have proven to be effective in the prevention of osteoporosis. It also contains a tetrapeptide that can speed up fat decomposition to aid in weight management. In addition, soy alleviates menopausal symptoms.

Compared to animal proteins, plant proteins such as soy protein are more easily absorbed by the body. Plant proteins provide the body with essential nutrients but with less fat and fewer calories. Besides, soy is rich in phytochemicals to effectively boost immune functions. The American Diabetes Association hails soy as the ideal source of protein for diabetics as soy does not burden the kidneys. Soy protein is a plant protein. Hence, it does not contain any animal hormones or fats, making it the healthier choice.

Soy Protein
Animal Protein
·   Low in calories.
·   High in fats and calories.
·   Easily broken down and absorbed.
·   Does not burden health.

·   The human body cannot break down     animal protein effectively.
·   Excessive consumption burdens and     damages the liver and kidneys.

·   Easily digested.
·   Does not cause allergies.

·   Difficult to digest.
·   May cause allergies.

·   Cholesterol-free.
·   High in saturated fats.
·   High in cholesterol.
·   Long-term consumption may increase     risk of diseases including     atherosclerosis, fatty liver, heart attack     and even cancer.

·   Can increase bone density and     enhances calcium retention.
·   Research shows that replacing     animal protein with soy protein can     lower calcium loss by 50%.

·   Excessive consumption increases     calcium loss from the body.
·   Increases risk of osteoporosis.

As we know that due to the modern lifestyle eg. taking more dairy products or meats in order to get more protein and calcium, however this nutrition misconceptions has causing more and more complications happen during pregnancy such as hypertension, gestational diabetes and etc.

So if not animal based protein then what?

Soypro is the perfect sources of PROTEIN, CALCIUM, FOLIC ACID & MINERALS & VITAMINS that a pregnant mummy or kids ever needs.

Soypro is a daily nutritional beverage formulated upon the principles of Nutritional Immunology. It is rich in soy protein, which is easily absorbed by the human body. 2. Iron

Iron is an essential part of hemoglobin in red blood cells. Hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to the cells to make energy.

There are two major sources of iron in our food: heme iron in meat (especially liver), fish and poultry, and nonheme iron in legumes, grains, fruits and vegetables.

Iron from meat or pills may lead to overdose, is high in cholesterol and fat, and is rapidly absorbed regardless of the body’s needs. Iron from plants, on the other hand, has no risk of overdose, is cholesterol-free and low-fat, and absorbed according to the body’s needs.

Side effects of iron pills include constipation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dark colored stools, abdominal distress, and increased oxidative stress from overdose. In children, death has occurred from ingesting 200mg of iron.

Those who should not take iron pills include postmenopausal women and people with hemochromatosis, which causes excessive absorption of iron, leading to a build-up of excess iron in organ tissues.

VEGAPLEX capsules are a source of vitamin B12 and wholesome plant foods that provide iron and phytonutrients. They are made from ABM mushroom, Maitake mushroom, acerola cherries and blueberries. VEGAPLEX is suitable for vegetarians and those who want to enhance their absorption of vitamin B12 and iron.

VEGAPLEX has the following benefits:
  • Zero cholesterol and fat.
  • Lower in calories.
  • Rich in healthful phytonutrients.
  • More fiber.
  • No additives.
  • No risk of iron overdose or side effects.

 3. Omega 3 fatty acid

Children and infants need omega-3 fatty acids. DHA is found in the brain in large quantities and is important for neurological development and growth. The human body can convert ALA into DHA.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to human cell membranes. They help reduce triglycerides (fats in the blood), lower blood pressure and prevent atherosclerosis, thereby promoting cardiovascular health and a stronger immune system, which, in turn, helps reduce inflammation and allergic reactions. Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids promote better learning and cognition, playing a key role in early childhood development.

Hence, Omega 3 should come from wholesome plant like Chia Seed and Kiwi seed.

Chia seeds are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. It is also rich in flavonol glycosides and chlorogenic acid, which help combat free radical damage and nourish the immune system. Kiwi fruit seeds are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and contains about 62% ALA. Kiwi fruit seeds are also high in tocotrienols, which help lower cholesterol, prevent atherosclerosis, and combat free radical damage.

O-SEED is made from chia seeds and kiwi fruit seeds. O-SEED is suitable for vegetarians and those who do not like the fishy taste or burp of omega-3 fish oil supplements.

What benefits does O-SEED have over fish oil supplements?

O-SEED has the following benefits:
• Rich in ALA, an omega-3 essential fatty acid found ONLY in plants.
• No fishy smell and aftertaste.
• No risk of toxic contaminants.
• No unpleasant side effects associated with fish oil supplements, e.g. diarrhea, abdominal bloating, nosebleeds.
• Fish oil may interact with medications, e.g. blood thinners, aspirin and high blood pressure drugs.
• An overdose of fish oil can lead to increased risk of stroke and cancer.
• Will not deplete vitamin E.
• Zero cholesterol.
• Lower in calories. One O-SEED capsule has 2 calories. One tablespoon of cod liver oil has 122 calories.
• Has healthful phytonutrients.
• Eco-friendly. Does not use blubber from endangered species of whales and seals. Dolphins may end up in fishermen’s nets with tuna, which is used in fish oil supplements.

4. Disease Fighting Nutrient & Collagen

Last but not least, we need to build up our immunity and lay down a solid health foundation of our precious one since they are inside our tummy.

It is important to include Oxyginberry/Rosytime as part of pregnancy diet as well.

Oxyginberry/Rosytime helps our self produced collagen which is very important to keep us younger & healthy. Our uterus needs support too, all depend on muscle strength and level of collagen inside us.

Do not go for the oral replacement collagen or placenta, it may sounds fantastic, however what about the side effects? As SAFETY is utmost priority.

With younger immune system, our body will perform defense - against bacteria/virus infection, cleanse - toxins we get in touch day in day out and repair!

6. Product Safety

Product safety has become a major concern for consumers. In recent years, you hear about products that have been recalled back due to safety issues eg the baby milk powder, instant noodles, and many more. After many incidents of food poisoning and contamination that cause health hazards, consumers become wiser. Consumers not only concern about the products effectiveness but they look for quality and safe product.

Fish oil: friend or foe?

News out of Seattle is sure to fuel confusion about fish oil supplements.

Take this email I got yesterday from a friend. “Ok, I give up. Should I take them? Throw them away?
June 29 — Fish oil may prevent breast cancer. Today (July 11) — Fish oil may increase risk of prostate cancer.”

First, the latest news. A study by scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle linked eating a lot of oily fish or taking potent fish oil supplements to a 43% increased risk for prostate cancer overall, and a 71% increased risk for aggressive prostate cancer. Their report was published online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

They came to this conclusion by looking at blood samples of men taking part in the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial. (That trial, dubbed SELECT, found that selenium supplements did nothing to prevent prostate cancer, while vitamin E supplements slightly increased prostate cancer risk. Blood samples from men who had developed prostate cancer over the course of the trial had more omega-3 fats than those of men who didn’t develop prostate cancer.

Omega-3s in balance

What’s so special about fish oil? It’s loaded with omega-3 fatty acids. These must come from food, since our bodies can’t make them.

The two key omega-3 fatty acids are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are rich in these omega-3s. Some plants are rich in another type of omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid, which the body can convert to DHA and EPA. Good sources of these are chia seeds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and canola oil.

Omega-3 fatty acids play important roles in brain function, normal growth and development, and inflammation. Deficiencies have been linked to a variety of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, some cancers, mood disorders, arthritis, and more. But that doesn’t mean taking high doses translates to better health and disease prevention.

Fish oil supplements have been promoted as easy way to protect the heart, ease inflammation, improve mental health, and lengthen life. Such claims are one reason why Americans spend more than $1 billion a year on over-the-counter fish oil. And food companies are adding it to milk, yogurt, cereal, chocolate, cookies, juice, and hundreds of other foods.

The report from the Fred Hutchinson researchers is the latest to sound a warning about too much omega-3 fatty acids. Back in May, for example, Italian researchers reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that omega-3 fatty acid supplements did nothing to reduce heart attacks, strokes, or deaths from heart disease in people with risk factors for heart disease.

This work follows similar warnings about vitamin E supplements, beta carotene supplements, and other high-dose dietary supplements.

Evidence linking fish oil and cancer has been all over the map. Some research suggests diets high in fatty fish or fish oil supplements might reduce the risk of certain cancers, including prostate cancer. Other research shows no such association.

Take home message

How food, and its component molecules, affect the body is largely a mystery. That makes the use of supplements for anything other than treating a deficiency questionable.

Despite this one study, you should still consider eating fish and other seafood as a healthy strategy. If we could absolutely, positively say that the benefits of eating seafood comes entirely from omega-3 fats, then downing fish oil pills would be an alternative to eating fish. But it’s more than likely that you need the entire orchestra of fish fats, vitamins, minerals, and supporting molecules, rather than the lone notes of EPA and DHA.

The same holds true of other foods. Taking even a handful of supplements is no substitute for wealth of nutrients you get from eating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

What should you do if you currently take fish oil? If your doctor prescribed them—they are an approved and effective treatment  for people with high blood triglyceride levels—follow his or her instructions until you can have a conversation about fish oil.

If you are taking them on your own because you believe they are good for you, it’s time to rethink that strategy. If you don’t eat fish or other seafood, you can get omega-3s from chia seeds, walnuts, canola oil, and soy oil. One to two servings per day can help you avoid a deficiency of omega-3s.

Experts will surely remain divided on their opinions about fish oil supplements for the general population. And don’t expect any clarity about what to do any time soon. I expect other studies with flip-flopping results in the future.

Following food author Michael Pollan’s simple advice about choosing a diet may be the best way forward: “Eat food. Not too much. Mainly plants.”

Are you taking fish oil and cow's milk powder during pregnancy? Beware as it can affect health of you baby!

My background is chemical engineering, so I know what is behind the colourful pills and tablets.

In short, I never take any supplement as I know they are made from chemicals and not natural which may even cause side effects to human health in long run.
http://www.precisionnutrition.com/all-about-vitamin-supplements

Furthermore, nowadays malnutrition is actually very rare and taking multi-vitamins or minerals supplements may cause over dose which could result in side effects.

As such, I didn't take any supplements prescribed by my gynae which includes multi-vits, calcium and iron pills for my both pregnancies.

However during first pregnancy, I actually took fish oil supplements and pregnancy milk powder as those were the traditional source for DHA and proteins required for the baby in my womb.

While for second pregnancy, with better understanding on nutritional immunology, I realized that we can actually obtain Omega 3 from plant source, which is safer as it has no risk of contamination as compared to fish oil.

So instead of fish oil, I took Oseed which is made of chia seed and kiwi seed. Its plant based omega 3 so its definitely safer and healthier.

Same for protein source, I chose Nutrifresh - which contains soy protein, a plant based protein. Hence, it does not contain any animal hormones or fats, making it the healthier choice.

So what is the difference with these two 'looks no big deal' changes?

My experience is Jiaying is allergic to cow's milk protein and leads to eczema and prone to sinus problem, while Jiaxuan does not has such allergies problem.
