Tests Find More Than 200 Chemicals in Newborn Umbilical Cord Blood

U.S. minority infants are born carrying hundreds of chemicals in their bodies, according to a report released today by an environmental group.

The Environmental Working Group's study commissioned five laboratories to examine the umbilical cord blood of 10 babies of African-American, Hispanic and Asian heritage and found more than 200 chemicals in each newborn.

"We know the developing fetus is one of the most vulnerable populations, if not the most vulnerable, to environmental exposure," said Anila Jacobs, EWG senior scientist. "Their organ systems aren't mature and their detox methods are not in place, so cord blood gives us a good picture of exposure during this most vulnerable time of life."

Of particular concern to Jacobs: 21 newly detected contaminants, including the controversial plastics additive bisphenol A, or BPA, which mimics estrogen and has been shown to cause developmental problems and precancerous growth in animals. Last month, researchers reported that male Chinese factory workers exposed to high levels of the chemical experienced erectile dysfunction and other sexual problems.

"BPA is a really important finding because people are really aware about its potential toxicity," Jacobs told reporters. "This is the first study to find BPA in umbilical cord blood, and it correlates with national data on it."

Jacobs said the study focused on minority children to show that chemical exposure is ubiquitous, building on 2005 research on cord blood from 10 anonymous babies. That study found a similar body burden among the babies. This is the first study to look at chemicals in minority newborns.
"Minority groups may have increased exposure to certain chemicals, but here we didn't focus on those chemicals," Jacobs said. "The sample size is too small to see major differences, but we want to increase awareness about chemical exposures."

Leo Trasande, co-director of the Children's Environmental Health Center at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, said the findings, while preliminary, show that minority communities are often disproportionately affected by chemical exposure. Trasande was not involved in the EWG study.
"Presently, minority communities suffer from a host of chronic disorders, and disproportionate chemical exposures may contribute significantly to the origins of the disparities that exist," Trasande said.

Both he and Jacobs said the findings add momentum for the call to revamp the Toxic Substances Control Act, or TSCA, the law regulating the more than 80,000 chemicals on its database. They released the report on the same day that a Senate panel is scheduled to discuss the government's strategy for managing the tens of thousands of chemicals in the marketplace with an eye toward overhauling TSCA.
TSCA does not require most chemicals to be tested for safety before they are approved for widespread use. Because of this, Trasande said, less than half of the 3,000 high-production volume chemicals on the marketplace have toxicity data, and less than one-fifth have toxicity testing data on the effects on developing organs.

"These results are alarming for their implications of health impacts on children," Trasande said.
Another challenge facing chemical regulators is understanding how the different chemicals interact together, which is particularly significant given the number of chemicals found in people.
"What we're finding are complex mixtures of chemicals that sometimes have similar toxicities," Jacobs said. "There's an increased recognition that mixtures are a problem. ... It's very difficult to evaluate, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try. We should also try to decrease the toxicity of individual chemicals."

Another alarming article that reminding us - as a parent - the importance to be a wise consumer - not only to safeguard our own health but also our loved one, our vulnerable baby.

Some people asked me: where does all these chemicals coming from?

Other than those mentioned in the article, it can be from our daily life toiletries like toothpaste, facial wash, shampoo, body wash, body lotion and even cosmetic product like lipstick. All these chemicals will absorb into our body through our skin ya.

So it is important to take note of the carcinogenic agents like SLS, Triclosan in our daily toiletries.

Recently I have shared the Nutritional Immunology to a pregnant mother who is suffering from severe rashes. She has rashes on her neck, arms and tummy. And it did not help after seeing specialist. She felt helpless as doctor prescribed her anti-biotic and steriod cream in the end, of course according to doctor they are safe for consumption during pregnancy.

But as a wise mother, what do you think?

I am glad I am able to help this mother with NI knowledge.

In fact, rashes is considered as allergy.

Allergy, do u know why allergy happens? It’s because our immune system is mal-function.
Allergy happens when our  immune system is hypersensitive. It will attack those non threatening agents.

So what we need is a balanced immune system. By giving our immune system correct nutrient through wholesome plant food, our immune system will know when to attack and when to stop, what to be attack and what not to be attacked and how to attack.

And also share the tips to be wise consumer with her:

1. product must be wholesome, non-GMO & organic
2. must be certified with AVA cert.
3. both manufacturer and distributor must be the same
4. if chemical product like cosmetic - must ensure the safety for example all raw material must have MSDS, free from SLS, triclosan,

JX has unknown rashes / insect bites

On Monday morning, we noticed that JX has rashes all over her face and legs. We were not sure whether it was allergy or insect bites.

Anyway, we gives her Oxyginberry and applying Elemente Baby lotion on the affected area.

Didn't bring her for PD as we know we will bring home another tube of cream which would have steroid content and most probably another bottle of Zyrtec. So, rather than wasting the money on seeing a doctor, why not give her immune system proper nourishment to work out on the rashes instead?

A picture is worth a thousand words:

Parents, will you give your child Zyrtec or wholesome plant food product when your kids has allergy?
Do take note of the sticker on top of the Zyrtec box ya.

Troubled by Eczema problem? Read this!!!

Does your child has eczema problem as well? What can we do as parents?

JY has eczema problem since infant, mostly on her face, both inner elbow and ankles.
Inner elbow and ankle were most headache as she will kept on scratching till bleeding.

It was such a horrible experience whenever he eczema flare up. I believe parents who has similar experience must be able to relate to ya.

If you consult doctors, they will surely prescribe you with steroid creams to clear the flare-up. First they will prescribe you mild steroid cream, if there is no improvement after 3-7 days, a stronger steroid cream is usually prescribed.

All of us know that steroid cream not only doesn't cure eczema, but has side effects i.e. prolonged use may thin the skin. But if don't use steroid cream, then how?

Before getting to know the science of Nutritional Immunology, I was clueless when come to eczema as we used to thought there's no cure on eczema.

After get to know the science of Nutritional Immunology, I learnt that in fact eczema is due to malfunctioning of our immune system, where our immune system over-sensitive thereby attacking those non-threatening agents.

To add on:

Do you know our immune system malfunction in several ways:

1. Weaken/aged immune system -  a weak immune system cannot protect us and leaves us prone to infectious disease like SARS, pneumonia, meningitis, hepatitis, influenza, tuberculosis, food poisoning and HFMD or even cancer.

2. Oversensitivity of immune system -  where our immune system over-sensitive thereby attacking those non-threatening agents. When this happens, we get an allergic reaction.

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology says that allergies can strike at any time. It has been reported that one in 4 people  in the US and one in 6 people in the UK have some form of allergy.
Allergic reaction can be classified into 3 main types - respiratory, food and skin.

3. Blind-folded immune system - Our immune system is programmed to distinguish between enemy cells and the body's own cells. Sometimes, the immune system behaves like a blind-folded soldier and mistakenly kills our own cells, leading to auto-immune disease.

Example of auto-immune disease:
- rheumatism
- multiple sclerosis
- diabetes mellitus,
- systematic lupus erythematosus
- scleroderma
- eczema
- psorisasis
- Crohn's disease
- chronic fatigue syndrome

So the only way to solve eczema problem is to give correct nutrients to our immune system to slowly let our immune system to get back to healthy, balance and smart state.

The correct nutrients must come from wholesome plant food.
So here I would like to share with you the two approaches I used to solve JY's eczema problem.

1. To stop the inflammation:

I have tried numerous steroid creams from doctor.

Of course I knew steroid cream has side effect, but I have no other alternative by that time.

Until I learn how to solve this problem with the science of nutritional immunology, phew, no more steroid cream for JY, yippie :)

So what I am using is Elemente Baby Lotion

Elemente Baby lotion is non-alkaline, soap-free, low-irritation and hypoallergenic, making them ideal for protecting baby’s delicate, fragile skin. Skin becomes moisturized and supple when ginseng berry extract is applied. Cactus extract has anti-inflammatory ability speeds up wound healing as well.

Most importantly is the safety of the product: https://nutritionalimmunologylifestyle.blogspot.sg/2015/10/the-greatest-assurance-for-consumer.html

2. Straight to the root cause of eczema – we gives Oxyginberry to JY:

Basically eczema is an autoimmune skin diseases - a skin condition where skin does not have the ability to retain moisture properly. It’s normal for water to evaporate from everyone’s skin, but if someone has eczema it means their skin tends to lose more moisture. This above-normal level of moisture loss in the skin makes the skin more susceptible to irritations and rashes.

So what is Oxyginberry and how can Oxyginberry helps eczema?

Oxyginberry is a wholesome plant food, organic and non-GMO product made up by 6 precious ingredients namely ginseng berry, cactus fruit, cactus, rose, seaweed, & grapeseeds. Combination of these 6 high antioxidant and high phytochemical ingredients not only strengthen immunity but allow our body produce large amount of collagen on its own thus prevent diseases.

How can Oxyginberry helps eczema? Ginseng berry inside Oxyginberry is very high in antioxidant can increase skin hydrating capability thus it can address the cause of eczema which is skin lose the ability to lock the moisture very well. Other than that, Cactus fruit & cactus can promoting cell repair and renewal, in other word helps to heal the dry and scaly patches appearing on the skin. Rose has anti-inflammatory proprieties.

Basically Oxyginberry is not only meant for eczema, just as we are giving our immune system correct nutrient so our immune system will carry out 3 tasks i.e. defense, cleanse and repair.

Do remember eczema is an autoimmune disease, so in order to solve it we must give correct nutrient to our immune system to carry out the defense, cleanse and repair tasks! So we don't have to worry on whether the eczema is triggered by environment or chemical or food. As we are using preventive approach here, not the proactive approach.

Some of my friends asked why kids need collagen – of course they need, they need collagen to retain the skin moisture. But the collagen must be produced by our own body – not the oral type.

With the science of nutritional immunology, I am happy and relief that I am able to handle my daughter's health without any western or TCM. A happy and healthy baby makes a happy mummy :)

Do contact me if you want to know more on the approaches to solve eczema problem with science of nutritional immunology which is safe and effective.

Updates:
As they are growing up, I now using Elemente Rose Cream which has soothing, calming and anti-bacterial effect.

JY has cow's milk protein allergy

As we don't have any cow's milk protein allergy history in both my and my husband family, that's why we took 4 months to discover this problem on JY.

She had rashes on her face, neck and even in her ear few days after she was born. I tried all means and ways to tackle her rashes problem i.e. stopped post-natal malay massage (thought might be allergic to the oil), changed her bedsheets every two to three days, brought her to visit n-times of PD - from heat rash to fungal infection - ended up with endless steroid cream - however it doesn't help at all.

Only till when I visited a PD in my hometown, the PD suggested it might be food allergy which never ever cross my mind before as we don't have such history before. As i was still breastfeeding that time, so i headed PD advice and stopped drinking milk, guess what? Jiaying's rashes were noticeable subsided alot!

Remember it can take 10 days to 3 weeks to eliminate cow's milk protein from your body, so JY's rashes took about 2 weeks to fully subsided. However, her rashes has turned into eczema problem on her neck, wrists, ankles, crease between buttock and legs.

I can understand the tough journey of  parents with eczema problem children, as i was one of them before. For example, they tends to be fussier as irritation from eczema, and sometimes even disturb their sleep. We   have to say no to any dairy contain food, but unfortunately lots of food like baby cereal, biscuit do contain traces of milk. So I can only go for organic range of baby food.

Here I would like to thanks to the science of nutritional immunology which helps solved JY's eczema problem.
