Honoured to be invited by Mums Space Summit to share with public on what food is good to support both brain and immunity, and 3 foods to avoid.
After the LIVE, received few requests from mummies what are they and where to get them. So i decided to blog here for all the mummies out there too.
Let me briefly intro who am i and what i do again :)
I am a food
expert, I am also an educator and health solution provider.
I teach
people how to eat healthily, how to eat a correct healthy breakfast, how to be
a wise consumer by learn to read ingredients label, so we can avoid many
nutrition misconception, so that our baby our kids can grow up healthily
without medication or sickness, as parents we can stay away from chronic
diseases and free from medication too.
I was a
senior chemical engineer before embark into health educator career. I am
trained in the science of Nutritional Immunology. The science of Nutritional
Immunology is a science that study the link between our immune system and the
food we eat. Today in order to have a healthy body, we need to have a healthy
immune system becoz immune system is the best doctor in the world, and good
news is we are all born with it J
How to have
a healthy immune system, we need to nourish it with correct nutrient from
wholesome plant food, so it can perform Defence, Cleanse and Repair functions
accordingly.
Eg when our
kids fever, it is not an illness, it is a sign that our immune system is
fighting due to foreign invaders inside us, so don’t rush to give medication to
our baby our kids, because it is unfavourable to our immune system, instead we
should monitor and give the right weapon which is right food to their immune
system to fight.
Another
common misconception is coughing, do you know coughing at initial stage is not
any illness too? Coughing meaning body is doing cleansing function. Coughing
medication is just to suppress the cleansing process, and causing rubbish
accumulated inside our baby our kids body without knowingly.
Afterall
too much of medication, wrong food affect their brain functions too.
So as
parents, equip ourselves with the right and updated health wisdom is important,
so we can safeguard our loved ones health.
A) 1. How to support my child’s
growing brain and body? (brain food & food that build immunity)
When come
to how to support our child’s growing brain and body – I will share the 3 food
to eat.
As I
mentioned earlier, our immune system really loves wholesome plant food, as it
gives our immune system the right nutrients.
So for 0 to 6 years old what to eat for better brain and immunity:
1. Ensure our baby our kids having sufficient of plant protein in their diet.
Protein is important for
babies, kids and even adults. Our body smallest unit is cells, cells forms
tissues then tissues form organs and organs form body system. Do you know our body regenerate in ave
200billions cells per day. So in short, to have a healthy brain and body, we
need to ensure the regenerated cells are healthy by ensure we have given
sufficient plant protein to our kids. Sufficient protein – to support normal
growth and development, build muscles, build brain cells and etc.
For 0 to 6 months – the best protein source come from mummy’s breastmilk. It is the best beverage for our loved one, but provided mummy eating correctly too, as we are what we eat, what we eat we pass down via breastmilk too. After weaning off from breastmilk, the best and safest source for protein and calcium is in fact from wholesome Soy. There's a small percentage ppl allergic to soy, but if you are one of them, go for other alternative plant protein, ensure it is wholesome too.
For soy the protein
content is 2 times of meat, 3 times than egg, 12 times than milk.
I know when I talk about Soy, there will be 2 groups of ppl. One group is Soy supporter. The other group is of course they have misconception on Soy. PM me, I can help on your misconception on SOY.
2. After our baby can start solid food, give plenty of Wholesome plant food – as our immune system really loves plant food. Because plant food can give our immune system other than the common vitamins and minerals we know like vitamin A B C.. it gives our immune system disease fight nutrients like antioxidants, phytochemicals and polysaccharides. Eg during fever time, give more plants which is high in antioxidants and phytochemicals eg cactus – to anti-inflammatory, speed up recovery. Mushrooms high in polysaccharides can destroy the virus or bacterial. More variety too eg different colour like red, orange, beige, purple, blue. Like red is good for our heart and eyes. FDA recommendation: Eat at least 400grams of vegetables per day to prevent cancer.
3.
Brain food like soy, food grade
ginseng eg American ginseng, jilin ginseng, lion mare mushrooms.
Our diet can affect
neurogenesis – the process by which new neurons are formed in the brain.
(NGF and Myelin)
Your brain has protein
called NGF, NGF protects your neurons and help them survive, remain healthy and
grow.
It is crucial in
developing the brain. NGF improves memory and learning by helping sheathes
neurons in myelin. Myelin helps signals move quickly and efficiently between
neurons. The better and faster these signals, the better your memory.
Both ginseng and lion mare mushrooms – helps in stimulating the production of NGF.
B)
2. Reports have shown that
eating junk food leads to obesity and behavior issues, is that to do with the
lack of “delayed gratification” or the chemistry as we ingest these foods?
Yes, There’s a research done by Australian scientist, on 23k pregnant women, on how their eating habits during pregnancy can affect the kids behavior till 5 years old. Research shows that mummy taking more junk food like ice cream, chips during the 9 months pregnancy / taking more high sugar, high fats food, the kids tends to misbehave, agitate, and throw tantrums as compare to pregnant mummies who ate more healthy food.
This research once again telling us – we are
what we eat. Both brain health & immunity of baby in fact started since
they are inside our womb. So if any pregnant mummies are watching, do look
after what you eat, or you can read here: https://nutritionalimmunologylifestyle.blogspot.com/2015/08/super-foods-for-pregnancy.html
So for 0 to
6 years old what to avoid:
1.
1. Animal products eg dairy, milk, ham,
bacon, sausages, deep fried stuff.
Why? Because dairy is really not as healthy as what we thought, and it
is not the best can safest source of protein and calcium. Cows milk is for
calf, not for human babies. For 0 to 6months old, the best food is mummy’s
breastmilk.
For highly processed food like ham, bacon, sausages – it is a comfort
food for many kids, however there sodium
nitrate in it, to make the pink colour, ya, it is unfortunately a cancer
causing agent. There’s a research in Taiwan, by consuming ham, bacon, sausages
up to twice a week, it increase 74% risk of getting leukemia, the figure is
quite alarming.
2. Synthetic supplements like vit c candy, syrup, fish oil, probiotic and etc.
Because synthetic supplements when overdose it has side effects and further burden our kids liver. For eg vit c if overdose, it can cause kidney stone. Can u imagine if the kid thought vit c candy is candy, and finish it up a bottle a day unknowingly? The toxins build up in kids body if overdosing the synthetic supplement do affect their brain too.
3. Sugary drink like bubble tea, milk or chocolate shake, milo.
Those are empty calories – causing weight gain, obesity, kids behavior become very hot temper and impatient too .
Be a wise parent, learn to read ingredients label. Ensure children have
the right breakfast too, don’t skip breakfast, because there’s study shows that
kids have breakfast have better memory and higher IQs.
After eating junk food, but must ensure body has disease fighting nutrients to offset the effect from animal products.
Health is factor of 4 – we called it nutritional immunology lifestyle.
Healthy diet – plenty of fruits and vegetables, water.
Get enough rest and sleep.
Stable emotion, find ways to reduce stress.
Exercise every day!
